April 17, 2008A Better Tomorrow
I had never heard about this movie before prior to my arrival in Hong Kong, I bought the VCD because the movie director was by John Woo.. and I discovered a pure masterpiece. A Better Tomorrow stars three huge actors (Chow Yun Fat, Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung) performing at their best in a story all about mob violence, but with ethics, which style would be later dubbed as “Heroic Bloodshed“. The movie title admirably sums up the unrealized hope of two Triad members. To the Hollywood blockbusters lovers, here is a warning: in Heroic Bloodshed, gun fights are not supposed to be perfectly realistic but are rather used in a stylized way, a kind of transposition of ancient dramatic sword fights into modern times. The first ten minutes of the movie (see excerpt above) are my favorite ones: Hong Kong in the 1980s, Chow Yun Fat young with a sunny smile when looking at USD100 fake notes replicated using oversized computers and the unforgettable 1980s soundtrack.
