June 2, 2008Welcome to the Ladies’ Market, Mong Kok!
A must-see place in Mong Kok, the Ladies’ Market is located on Tung Choi street. Known as a place for cheap fakes, the Ladies’ Market usually attracts a lot of tourists, but also Chinese. When walking along the stands, you will hear some “fake watches sir!” or “jeans sir!” or any possible thing that could be replicated and sold for a tenth of the initial price. Stands are specialized: some sell shoes, some other clothes, some other wrestling black T-Shirts or dolls or DVDs. Stands selling DVDs usually display Chinese movies or operas on the front and, somewhere else in the stand, hide a whole bunch of really cheap copied Hollywood blockbusters for gwailos (but you have to ask in order to get access to them). It’s quite funny to know that “real” DVDs and VCDs are sold in Sai Yeung Choi Street South (one of the two streets parallel to Tung Choi Street, walking westwards to Nathan Road) and “real” shoes are sold in the other parallel street (walking eastwards).. and still, in-between these two streets, somewhere in the continuous walking crowd of Mong Kok, there is a place where everything is fake and where negotiation is strongly encouraged.
