June 11, 2008Dragon Boat race

Every year, in June, there’s a Dragon Boat race in Stanley beach (and in other beaches of Hong Kong too). As you can see in the picture above, Dragon Boat is totally human-powered with two paddlers per row, a drummer in the front of the boat and a steerer in the back. This means that during the whole race one of your arms will work much more than the other. Dragon boat requires a preparation, at least to coordinate paddlers together. The competition is divided between Chinese-only boats and gwailo boats: gwailos being less used to practicing Dragon boat, they have their own competition.. which doesn’t mean gwailo boats don’t go fast! Originally coming from a Chinese legend, Dragon boat is now an official sport. There’s a famous Dragon boat scene opening the movie The Killer.
